A Marble Lamb

Lambs, a popular Easter symbol, were also a common motif on children's graves.  Many lambs - usually marble - can be found throughout the Albany Rural Cemetery.  This one, its base unfortunately fallen, is located along the edge of the North Ridge.

  1. Yes, many children's graves are topped with marble lambs in Albany Rural. It is unfortunate that this stone has fallen. Fortunately it can be leveled and "put back". At one of my ancestor's grave site at Albany Rural, I believe someone tried to steal the marble lamb off my infant uncle's gravestone and broke the head of the lamb off. I believe this to be true since it was complete/attached 20 years earlier. Today the head is missing and there is no evidence of anything overhead to fall on the stone.
